SMITHFIELD/PROVIDENCE/JOHNSTON – The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) is thrilled that it’s Autumn – a beautiful time to be out in nature! This September, the WRWC is offering a new paddle on the Lower Woonasquatucket River Reservoir, the last downtown paddle of the season and a bike ride to Dame Farm for apple picking! These trips are part of the WRWC’s “Explore the Woonasquatucket” Recreation Series, which offers year-round guided tours of beautiful and historic sites throughout the Woonasquatucket River watershed – with paddle trips, hikes, and bike rides.
SMITHFIELD – Sunday, September 10th, 12:00pm: Paddle Curran Reservoir: A brand new paddle for the WRWC, on the lower part of the Woonasquatucket Reservoir. We’ll launch from the Smithfield Conservation Center, the site of some exciting new plans in partnership with the WRWC’s education program. Amanda Peavey, Director of Education Programs will give a tour of the soon-to-be WRWC Education Center and then join the paddle to talk more about what’s to come!
PROVIDENCE – On Sunday, September 17th, 9:00am: Paddle Downtown Providence: Come on down to Providence for a crisp Sunday morning paddle on this beautiful stretch of hidden wilderness, the lower Woonasquatucket River. We’ll start at the boat launch on South Water St. and travel through bustling downtown Providence, through Waterplace Park and up to Eagle Square.
JOHNSTON – On Saturday, September 23rd, 10:00am: Bike to Dame Farm for Apple Picking: Join the WRWC for a pleasant bike ride from Riverside Park in Providence to Dame Farm in Johnston for some classic autumn apple picking! Riders will travel as a group along the Woonasquatucket River Greenway bike path. Where the paved path ends in Johnston, riders will travel along Greenville Avenue, passing by many of Johnston’s scenic farms and Snake Den State Park. This ride is 14 miles round trip, with some steep hills.
PROVIDENCE – Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 – Free Community Paddle trips on the Woonasquatucket River at Riverside Park in Providence: Canoe with our experienced WRWC Paddle Team. The WRWC will offer FREE canoe rides on the river on Thursday evenings until September 14th at Providence’s popular Riverside Park in Olneyville. The Community Paddle series is generously funded by AARP Rhode Island, BayCoast Bank, and Navigant Credit Union.
