Flooding with PEMA: A Community Workshop at the Olneyville Resilience Hub

At our latest Speakers Series event, the Olneyville Resilience Hub welcomed the Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) for a free flooding preparedness workshop. Eighteen neighbors joined us to learn what actions to take before, during, and after a flood to stay safe and protect their families and homes. One lucky participant even went home with a flood cleanup kit, raffled off as part of the evening!

Flooding is the most common and costly natural hazard in New England, especially in Rhode Island, where our rivers, coastline, and dense urban areas make us vulnerable to everything from river and coastal flooding to stormwater runoff in city streets. Preparing for floods is critical—whether from spring rain, hurricanes, or sudden flash floods.

Not sure if you’re in a flood-prone area? Use the Rhode Island Floodplain Viewer to check your risk and visit the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency for more resources.

Stay alert:

  • Flood Watch: Flooding is possible—be prepared.

  • Flood Warning: Flooding is happening—avoid low areas.

  • Flash Flood Warning: Flooding is imminent—seek higher ground immediately.

We’re grateful to PEMA for sharing vital tools and knowledge with our community. Stay safe and stay prepared!
