We are thrilled to announce that the Manton Outdoor Classroom and Native Plant Garden Project is now underway in Johnston, Rhode Island. This innovative project aims to develop an outdoor classroom and garden that will serve the public, school groups, and cohort groups through our Educational Program.
Our Goals and Features
The overarching goal of this project is to create a dynamic outdoor educational space. We are developing a curriculum tailored specifically to this location, ensuring meaningful and engaging visits. Educational activities will include lessons on the fish ladder, native vegetation, local habitats, and more.
Public Accessibility and Amenities
In addition to serving educational groups, the space will be accessible to the general public. We have included several elements to promote public enjoyment, such as seating, fishing spaces, bicycle racks, and educational signage. The site’s proximity to the existing multi-use trail enhances its appeal for recreational activities. We also plan to host community events at the site, including nature surveys, clean-ups, and guided hikes.
Environmental Improvements and Sustainability
We are committed to improving the site to promote native habitats and enhance climate resiliency. Our WRWC River Rangers will monitor and maintain the site to ensure the sustainability and longevity of these improvements.
Educational and Community Impact
This project aligns with our mission to “create positive environmental, social, and economic change by revitalizing the Woonasquatucket River, its Greenway, and its communities.” Our initiative will focus on:
- Providing environmental and science education to students of all levels
- Enhancing access to nature-based recreational activities
- Promoting native plant growth
- Improving fish and wildlife habitats
- Increasing resilience to climate change
The outdoor classroom will host numerous community events, feature an extensive curriculum, and install signage to educate the public about environmental issues.
