Celebrating Community and Nature: WRWC TerraCorps Members Featured on The Rhode Show
We’re excited to share that our WRWC TerraCorps members, Gianna Lourenco, Milo Harris, and India Jencks, were recently featured on WPRI’s The Rhode Home. They appeared alongside our long-time supporters, Ron and Pete Cardi of Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses (NIROPE), to discuss the newly opened Community Pollinator Garden at Donigian Park.
The Grand Opening of the Community Pollinator Garden
On Saturday, June 8th, we celebrated the grand opening of the Pollinator Garden at Donigian Park. This event marked a significant milestone for the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) and the Olneyville and Valley communities. Neighbors and families gathered to participate in a gardening workshop hosted by our TerraCorps team, officially launching this vibrant new garden.
Over the past nine months, the WRWC TerraCorps team has worked alongside local community members to establish this pollinator garden. This project, centered on native flowering plants, aims to support local pollinator species and provide educational opportunities about their importance to our ecosystem.
With generous funding from a Bloom Rhode Island grant, the team successfully installed five raised garden beds at Donigian Park. This popular park in the Olneyville neighborhood now hosts a space designed to highlight Rhode Island’s local wildlife and foster community engagement.
Special thanks go to Waleska and Luis Pinto, Myra Morales, and Maria Jose Gutierrez, who provided invaluable guidance and knowledge throughout the project. These community members will also play a key role in maintaining the garden’s health for future visitors.
Future Events and Opportunities
The opening event was just the beginning of many community activities planned for the garden. We are thrilled to announce our first volunteer day on Saturday, July 13th, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Join us for sign-creation and rock-painting activities, designed for neighbors of all ages and abilities. We look forward to seeing you there!
