New Voices, New Leaders: Welcoming Our Sixth Nuevas Voces Cohort!
A new group of community members is beginning an exciting journey of learning, leadership, and environmental advocacy!
On September 9, WRWC welcomed 16 participants to the sixth cohort of Nuevas Voces (New Voices), our community leadership program focused on environmental justice, climate resilience, and helping residents become advocates for their neighborhoods.
The group gathered at United Way for an orientation filled with introductions, conversation, and a shared meal.
Participants met the WRWC Community Action team, learned about the program, and began building relationships with one another.

Learning About Our River and Communities
The first class, held September 16 at WRWC’s office, explored the history of the Woonasquatucket River, Olneyville, and Providence.
Participants learned about the river’s importance throughout history, the effects of industrial development and pollution, and the ways immigration and neighborhood change have shaped the communities we know today.
The group also discussed their personal experiences with the river and what they hope to learn throughout the program.
On October 7, participants returned for Climate Change 101, led by Jen West from the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Together, they explored the causes of climate change, how its impacts affect Providence, and what communities can do to prepare and respond.
Thoughtful questions and group discussions helped connect these big environmental issues to people’s everyday lives.
Later in October, the group was scheduled to visit Riverside Park with WRWC Executive Director Alicia Lehrer to explore river restoration, recreation, and the importance of accessible public green spaces.

Building the Next Generation of Community Leaders
Nuevas Voces creates opportunities for residents to develop new skills, share their experiences, and help shape decisions affecting their communities.
Many graduates continue their leadership journeys through WRWC’s advanced Campeones del Combate Climático program and other opportunities throughout Rhode Island.
We’re excited to welcome this newest group of participants and look forward to everything we’ll learn and accomplish together.
Welcome to WRWC, Nuevas Voces Class of 2026–2027!
