Our Environmental Education team has been busy this spring, bringing nature, science, and fun to classrooms and after-school programs all across the Woonasquatucket watershed! Here’s a peek at what they’ve been up to:
River Adventurers In-Class (Middle School)
We wrapped up the school year with St. Augustine School in Providence, where middle schoolers explored local water systems and environmental issues right in their own community.
Birds of a Feather (3rd Grade) & Fish in the Classroom (4th Grade)
Thanks to support from the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program (NBEP), these two awesome programs are now running in eight schools each across Providence and North Providence! Third graders are learning mindfulness through birdwatching, while fourth graders dive deep into the life of fish.
Plus, thanks to a brand-new contract with the Providence Public School Department, we’ll be bringing these programs to three PPSD schools — with plans to keep them going for years to come!
In Smithfield, a three-year grant written by the Assistant Superintendent is letting us continue the birds program next year, giving even more kids the chance to connect with local wildlife.
Field Trip Season!
We’re right in the middle of spring field trips — and by the end of the season, we expect to have led over 15 field trips full of hands-on, outdoor learning.
Out-of-School Time (OST) Adventures
Through our partnership with the Providence After School Alliance (PASA), middle schoolers at DelSesto have become true River Adventurers — dissecting owl pellets, testing water quality, learning bike safety, picking up trash, and discovering how pollution impacts our river.
In North Providence, we teamed up with Kids Klub Inc. to bring “Fun with the Woonasquatucket” to elementary students. They’ve explored the watershed model, learned where pollution comes from, and met special guest Brookie (our big, friendly stuffed fish!) to understand fish adaptations up close.
Thank you to all our school and community partners for making this spring season a huge success! We can’t wait to keep inspiring the next generation of river stewards. Stay tuned for more adventures this summer!
