Sprague Farm Naturalist Hike
Friday, April 18, 2025—On Friday evening, six curious hikers joined WRWC for our very special naturalist hike at Sprague Farm, part of our growing recreation programming. Led by the knowledgeable duo Phil and Layla, we stepped into the rich natural and historical tapestry of Glocester’s preserved forest just as the day began to cool.
As we walked the beginner-friendly trails, we explored how New England’s ecology has shifted over time—from its glacial past to the dramatic changes brought on by colonization and modern human impact. We ducked into old stone foundations, learning about dry stack construction methods that have stood the test of time and now serve as homes for wildlife. Violet, a participant, remarked, “It was temperate; and I learned a lot.”
Along the way, we talked lone wolf pines, wetlands, fungal networks, and stone walls (and why there are so many in Rhode Island!). The group even used the iNaturalist app to track species in real time.
Thanks to everyone who joined—see you on the next trail! 🌿
