The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council’s Red Shed Bike Camp is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the first cohort of its summer-long program. Over the course of a week, 14 enthusiastic campers aged 8-13 participated in an engaging and educational experience, exploring the beautiful Woonasquatucket River Greenway on two wheels.
Under the guidance of Bike Education Director Donny Green, campers were transformed into “safe and predictable bike riders.” They practiced essential riding skills, including signaling and maintaining predictability on the road. The camp also emphasized watershed stewardship and basic bike maintenance, fostering a comprehensive understanding of both biking and environmental awareness.
Throughout the week, campers embarked on daily bike rides, covering a cumulative distance of 25 miles. Their journey took them from Riverside Park to various scenic locations, including the Skate Park, Adventure Park, Merino Park, and the Manton Fish Ladder. This immersive experience allowed them to appreciate the natural beauty along the Greenway while gaining the freedom and confidence that comes with proficient biking.
A particularly inspiring aspect of this cohort was the remarkable progress of three campers who had never ridden a bike before attending camp. By the end of the week, these young riders were confidently navigating the trails like pros. In addition to riding, all campers learned essential skills such as patching a flat tire and understanding the structure of a bike.
Red Shed Bike Camp is committed to making this enriching experience accessible to all. Through special scholarships, the camp ensures that every child, regardless of income, has the opportunity to participate and develop valuable skills.
As we celebrate the accomplishments of our first cohort, we look forward to welcoming more campers in the coming weeks. Together, we are fostering a new generation of safe, confident, and environmentally conscious bike riders.
