Our team is at the heart of everything we do at the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, and we’re excited to share their stories with you! In our “Meet the Team” series, we’ll highlight the passionate individuals who make our work possible—sharing their roles, inspirations, and favorite moments along the river. From personal reflections to environmental insights, this series is a way for you to connect with the people behind the WRWC and learn what drives them to protect and celebrate the Woonasquatucket River and its watershed.

Meet the Team: Mark Pereira (he/him)

What’s your role here at WRWC?
I am responsible for major projects that improve and expand the Greenway. This includes overseeing project planning, design, and construction; securing property permissions and funding; and working closely with the community.

How long have you been part of the WRWC team?
I have officially been part of the team for four years, but have worked with WRWC since 2017!

Is there something about the Woonasquatucket River or the work WRWC does that you wish more people understood? What would you shout from the rooftops about our mission?
Every mile of Greenway, every restored section of riverbank, and every piece of green infrastructure takes years to make happen. None of our projects happen without support. When people share our stories, donate, volunteer, and reach out to their local officials about our work, it truly moves projects forward and makes them a reality. We are grateful for everyone who helps push this work across the finish line.

What’s an environmental issue close to your heart that you’d love to see the community tackle? Why is it especially important to you?
The WRWC has made tremendous progress over the past 20+ years in transforming the Woonasquatucket River and its Greenway, but there is still so much work to be done. Every day I get to think about what is possible to make the Greenway more welcoming, sustainable, and beautiful for everyone. I am fortunate to be part of a team and a community where, together, we can make these ideas a reality.

Do you have a favorite spot along the river or in the watershed? What makes it special to you?
The Greenway! As you make your way along it, you get to experience murals, native gardens, art sculptures, river views, pocket parks, playing fields, a golf course, kayak launches, restaurants, coffee shops, skate parks, cycle tracks, playgrounds, community centers, and local commerce. The list is endless!

If you could share one small action with people that would help make a difference for the environment, what would it be?
Not littering is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect our environment.

If you could instantly master any skill or hobby, what would it be?
Playing the violin or automotive motorsports.

Do you have a favorite plant or tree, or a “green thumb” tip you swear by?
I do not have any “green thumb” tips, but fortunately I am surrounded by a great team of coworkers who do!

Is there an animal (wild or pet) that you feel a special connection to, or one that always makes you smile?
My dog Cooper!

Anything else you’d like to share with the world?
If you have not already, go check out the Greenway! Make sure to start in Downtown Providence so that you get to see our newest section along Providence Street and Kinsley Avenue. We are extremely grateful for our partnership with the City of Providence to make this project happen! And there is still more to come…
