We’re thrilled to share that construction of the Manton Outdoor Classroom and Native Plant Garden in Johnston, Rhode Island, is officially complete! This transformative project marks a milestone in our mission to foster environmental education, promote habitat restoration, and provide accessible outdoor spaces for learning and recreation. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for the spring of 2025, inviting the community to celebrate this new educational gem.

A Collaborative Effort

The completion of this project reflects a collaborative effort that underscores the power of community and environmental stewardship. Our WRWC River Rangers worked closely with the construction contractor, Manafort Brothers, to bring this vision to life. Rangers contributed by:

  • Painting key site elements
  • Removing invasive species to restore native habitats
  • Splitting and replanting grasses to support ecosystem diversity

A Vision Realized

When this initiative was first announced, we aimed to create a space that combined education, recreation, and environmental stewardship. With the final touches now complete, the Manton Outdoor Classroom will serve as:

  • An educational hub: A curriculum tailored to this location will offer hands-on lessons about the fish ladder, native vegetation, and local habitats.
  • A community asset: The site includes public seating, fishing spaces, bicycle racks, and proximity to the multi-use trail, creating opportunities for recreation and connection to nature.
  • An environmental sanctuary: Enhancements include native plantings, improved fish and wildlife habitats, and infrastructure designed to boost climate resilience.

What’s Next?

As we look forward to the ribbon-cutting ceremony in 2025, plans are already in place to maximize the site’s impact:

  • Educational Programming: Students and community groups will explore topics ranging from climate change to local ecology.
  • Community Events: Guided hikes, nature surveys, and clean-ups will encourage active participation and environmental advocacy.
  • Ongoing Maintenance: The WRWC River Rangers will oversee the site to ensure its sustainability and continued success.

A Lasting Impact

The Manton Outdoor Classroom represents more than a space—it embodies our commitment to creating positive environmental, social, and economic change. This project is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration, vision, and dedication.

Together, we’re creating a legacy of environmental education and a healthier, more resilient Woonasquatucket River.
