A Great Start at Joslin Community Garden

We had a beautiful day at our first Joslin Community Garden Work Day of 2026, and it felt like the perfect way to welcome the season.

25 neighbors and volunteers came out to help get the garden ready for spring. People jumped right in to clean up beds, spread mulch, plant, and take care of shared spaces. It was a great mix of longtime gardeners and new faces, all working together and getting to know each other.

We also took on invasive species and scraped a bunch of spotted lanternfly egg masses from around the garden. It is a small but important step in protecting the health of the space as things start to grow.

One of the highlights of the day was a compost demonstration led by Carla from Zero Waste Management. She walked folks through how the system works and how we can all play a part in turning food scraps into healthy soil. Huge thanks to Stewart from Providence Garden Works for donating the compost system last year and helping make this possible.

Another bright moment was seeing the crocuses in bloom. These were planted last year with corms donated by Bloom RI, and they brought some much needed color and a clear sign that spring is here.

It was a great day of hands-on work, learning, and community. We are excited to keep the momentum going and see the garden come to life over the next few months.
