Johnston Town Council quashes proposed bike-path extension

An update on the proposed Woonasquatucket River Greenway extension in Johnston:

The Johnston Town Council voted 4–0, with one abstention, to approve a resolution opposing the proposed one-mile Greenway extension between Johnston and Smithfield.

The resolution followed concerns raised by nearby residents, including impacts related to litter, pollution, safety, and neighborhood conditions.

Ahead of the vote, WRWC Executive Director Alicia Lehrer submitted a letter asking the Council to delay action until members could meet with WRWC and tour the project area. The proposed project represents more than $12 million in investment and includes plans to address localized flooding and water quality, improve public parks, create walking and biking connections, and connect Johnston with Esmond Village in Smithfield.

Councilman Robert Civetti abstained, stating that he wanted to hear WRWC’s perspective before taking action.
