WRWC Celebrates 25 Years at the First Ever Great Blue Heron Gathering
On March 24, 2026, the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) hosted its first ever Great Blue Heron Gathering at Track 15, bringing together over 50 donors, partners, staff, and volunteers to celebrate 25 years of river stewardship and community impact.

The evening was filled with warmth, stories, and laughter, as attendees enjoyed delicious food and drinks while connecting over a shared love for the Woonasquatucket River and its Greenway. The event kicked off with a short video featuring Jane Sherman, WRWC’s founder, sharing the origins of the organization and the Greenway. Guests were then treated to two thoughtful anniversary videos created by Senator Jack Reed and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, each reflecting on early memories of the Greenway and of Jane Sherman’s pioneering work. Both senators also provided official citations honoring Laureen Ratti, WRWC’s Board Chair Emeritus, for her remarkable leadership and dedication over the years.

The Gathering was a special opportunity to recognize Laureen Ratti, who served on the WRWC Board since 2013 and as Chair from 2020 until this year. Her strategic insight, financial expertise, and steadfast commitment helped guide WRWC through years of growth and transformation. Laureen shared after the event:
“It has been such a privilege to serve alongside all of you. The event demonstrated how strong the organization is and poised for an amazing future supporting the River and its Community… Having Jenn and Elder as current board leadership is a perfect example of what can be achieved with a Community Strategic Goal—they are truly role models.”
We were also thrilled to celebrate Jenn Recinos, WRWC’s new Board Chair, who has been engaged with the river and Greenway her entire life. Reflecting on the Gathering, Jenn said:
“It has been a privilege to work alongside Laureen and the WRWC team. Seeing photos of myself playing in Donigian Park back in the ‘90s reminds me of how far things have come, and I’m excited to be part of the continued growth and future of this work.”

A heartfelt thank you goes to Track 15, Chris Marsella, and his team for being such gracious hosts and for sharing the rich history of the space and its connection to the river. Their hospitality helped set the perfect tone for a night celebrating both history and progress.

As WRWC looks ahead to the next 25 years, the energy, generosity, and dedication of our supporters, staff, board, and volunteers give us confidence that the Woonasquatucket River and its Greenway will continue to thrive.
Here’s to the next 25 years!
