Location: 5 Waterview Drive, Smithfield, RI 02914
Date & Time: Saturday, December 13, 2025 • 2:00–5:00 pm EST
Overview
Join the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) and Andrew Middleton of The Map Center for a hands-on, beginner-friendly orienteering workshop followed by a guided hike in Smithfield’s Wolf Hill Preserve. Learn the basics of navigating through the woods using maps, compasses, and natural cues.
Event Details
We will meet at the Leo Bouchard Conservation Center (5 Waterview Drive, Smithfield, RI 02914) at 2:00 pm. From there, we’ll head into the woods to explore what it looks and feels like to navigate off-trail using simple orienteering techniques.
Skills covered include:
• Setting a bearing using a map
• Following a straight line without seeing your destination
• Backtracking with a compass or the sun
• Using stars to navigate at dusk
The workshop runs from 2:00–4:30 pm, followed by a warm-up and reflection period back at the Bouchard Center from 4:30–5:00 pm, complete with cider. All materials—including maps and compasses—will be provided.
This is a family-friendly event, though best suited for participants 16 and older. Because this workshop takes place mostly outdoors in December, please dress warmly. The final portion will occur after dark; bringing a flashlight or headlamp is recommended.
Cost & Registration
This program uses a sliding scale of $15–$30, with a pay-what-you-can option starting at $1 for online registration. Walk-ins are welcome. All proceeds support WRWC’s community and environmental work, as well as The Map Center.
In the case of inclement weather, the workshop will be postponed to Sunday, December 14 at the same time and place.
Accessibility & Parking
Parking is available at the Leo Bouchard Center, with additional on-street parking on Waterview Drive. The center has bathrooms and potable water. Please dress for winter conditions and bring a personal light source for navigating in the dark.
