Community MusicWorks Youth Concert Supports the WRWC
On Friday, May 9th, the Daily Orchestra Program’s Upper and Lower Elementary Orchestras at Community MusicWorks (CMW) held a special concert called Nature Songs—and the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council was honored to be a part of it.
The concert featured an impressive group of young string musicians performing thoughtful, nature-themed pieces at the CMW Center. Leading up to the show, students participated in a series of environmental education activities with WRWC staff, learning about the Woonasquatucket River, the impact of stormwater runoff and pollution, and how each of us can help care for our local environment.
As part of the program, students even had a chance to paddle the river themselves on a canoe trip at Riverside Park, led by WRWC’s former Recreation Director, Erik Talley—who also stepped in as the concert’s tech lead. We’re grateful for Erik’s ongoing support and river enthusiasm, both on and off the water.
After the music, guests were invited to interact with a temporary tape mural of the Woonasquatucket River created by the talented team at Tape Art. Attendees helped “clean” the river by removing pieces of tape litter and had the chance to add their own tape-drawn plants and animals to the scene—making the mural a community-built tribute to the river and the ecosystems it supports.
Thanks to the generosity of concert-goers and the CMW community, the event raised nearly $1,000 in donations for WRWC programs. We’re incredibly thankful to Community MusicWorks for choosing WRWC as the beneficiary of this event and for helping to build connections between young musicians, local art, and the natural world around them.
