This year marks the third successful year of the WRWC Trek Bicycle Mechanics Internship at The Met High School in Providence, RI! Through this hands-on program, students dive into the world of bike mechanics, learning the skills needed to assemble and maintain bicycles to shop-floor standards. Thanks to our partnership with Trek Bicycles, these students gain real-world experience and even have the opportunity to continue their training at local Trek stores.

Building Skills, One Bike at a Time

In Fall 2023, we welcomed two cohorts of six students into the program, where they honed their mechanical skills while developing problem-solving, critical thinking, and math and science fundamentals. By working hands-on with bikes, students not only built technical expertise but also gained confidence in their abilities. And of course, the best way to test their work? Taking the bikes out on the road!

On January 24th, 2024, our first two cohorts of the school year successfully completed their training, with eight students earning their Level 1 Bike Technician Certification from Trek. This certification marks a major step toward future opportunities in the cycling industry and beyond.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited to kick off our third cohort of the school year on February 4th, welcoming six new students into the program. And the momentum doesn’t stop there! In 2025, we’ll be entering our fourth year of the Trek Bicycle Mechanics Internship at The Met, expanding our reach and getting even more kids on bikes across Rhode Island.

This program is more than just mechanics—it’s about empowerment, career readiness, and building a lifelong passion for cycling. We can’t wait to see where the road takes these students next!
