Last week, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation confirmed that the Greystone Sluiceway Bridge, which borders Johnston and North Providence, will be replaced and turned into a bridge for bicyclists and pedestrians only.
Spokesperson Charles St. Martin shared that RIDOT has been coordinating with the cities of North Providence and Johnston on the upcoming project, which is part of an $8.5 million project with the Old Warwick Avenue Bridge in Warwick.
RIDOT’s plan includes the removal of existing structures of the Old Warwick Avenue and the Greystone Sluiceway Bridges in Warwick and North Providence, with structures replaced with pedestrian and bicycle bridges. In efforts to continue expanding the Woonasquatucket River Greenway, the WRWC aims to route the Greenway to connect it to the historic Cricket Field, eventually connecting the rest of the Greenway to the Blackstone River Bikeway and other bike paths in Rhode Island.
