The WRWC was featured in the news!

ABC6 News’ Tim Studebaker spoke with the WRWC’s Greenway Manager Jacob Gorke about the benefits of rain barrels for both home gardens and the environment. Rain barrels capture water from your roof and can be stored for later use like watering your lawn, garden, or plants. They also offer an environmental benefit: collecting and storing rain water helps keep contaminants from getting washed into rivers and other waterways, while also relieving the pressure from storm water infrastructure that is used for this purpose.

While there are personal and environmental benefits to using rain barrels for capturing storm water, Jacob Gorke warns that you should not use them for watering vegetables unless you have the proper roof and are sure the water is clean. If the quality of the water is unclear, he recommends getting it tested before using it for watering vegetables.

If you are interested in making your own rain barrel, the WRWC has an upcoming workshop this Saturday, May 7, from 12pm to 4pm. This workshop will teach you the steps to build and install your own rain barrel – and add a creative touch to your barrel by painting your own design along the sides. The workshop fee includes the barrel and the other materials you will need to make your own rain barrel. For more information and to register, visit https://wrwc.org/events/rain-barrel-workshop-2/.
