Rhode To Bicycle Safety

Statewide In-School Bike Education Program

The Rhode to Bicycle Safety (R2BS)

Founded in 2019, The Rhode to Bicycle Safety (R2BS) is a program of the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. R2BS empowers 5th-grade students across Rhode Island with the skills and confidence to safely ride their bikes—for transportation, exercise, and fun.

A Hands-On Learning Experience

Each year, R2BS reaches over 1,000 students through a comprehensive 180-minute course, delivered in four sessions during regular school hours. The program blends classroom learning with on-bike instruction, ensuring students gain practical, real-world cycling experience in a safe environment.

What Students Learn

  • Understanding the Rules of the Road
  • Proper helmet fitting and safety practices
  • Navigating intersections and right of way
  • Performing bicycle safety checks
  • Building confidence to ride safely in their communities
