The Greenway Program kicks off its annual activities each spring by inviting volunteers, sponsors, and community members to join the River Rangers at our Clean Days on the Greenway Kickoff event. Hundreds of volunteers ban together to begin sprucing up the Greenway after the snows melt. Volunteers dig into new projects, spring weeding and mulch mobs, in-water cleanups, shoreline litter sweeps, painting and graffiti removal projects, and more! The kickoff event concludes with a volunteer thank you party and invitation to continue helping in the Clean Days series.

The Annual Clean Days Series continues to include dozens of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Over 1300 people join WRWC annually in helping to make the Greenway a beautiful, safe, and vibrant place for all to enjoy. Volunteers provide service and receive education on the history and culture of the Woonasquatucket Greenway.

Can’t make it for the annual Kickoff? Groups can join a community Clean Day or create their own personal Clean Days activities alongside the River Rangers! See our calendar (online or as a printable PDF) for dates to join or contact us to create your own day.

Projects & Lunch Party

This will be the first of many events in parks on the Greenway celebrating Earth Day / Month. For the April 22nd Clean Days Kickoff, volunteer registration, projects and lunch party will be held at Merino Park on Heath St. We will have additional projects within walking at our Lincoln Lace & Braid site, the home of our future Teen Adventure Park. We are excited to continue being part of the City of Providence's annual Earth Day Cleanup.

At Merino Park, we'll have a variety of spring spruce up projects like hand-painting sign and barrel art, painting picnic tables, benches and arbors, sprucing up playground equipment and play surfaces, mulch mobbing gardens and trees, litter sweeping around the park and along the river banks, and in-river cleanups with waders and boats.

At the Lincoln Lace & Braid site, we'll be helping our neighbors spruce up the bike path entry, with painting and repair projects, moving and screening a dumpster, aerating and seeding grassy areas, hand-painting a new mini-mural, as well as litter sweeping around the park and along the river banks, and cleaning up illegal dumping.

Last Year!

During the 2016 Kickoff, we were super focused on cleanups and painting projects at both Riverside and Merino Parks. Groups gathered to show their love of the Greenway and their support of keeping it a safe, beautiful, vital connection between neighborhoods along the Woonasquatucket River. Volunteers came together to work on activities where they:

  • Hand-painted educational signs and artsy trash barrels
  • Stained safety bollards and painted railings
  • Built new custom picnic tables and a frame for the new Red Shed Green Roof
  • Weeded, aerated, & mulched planted beds and tree wells in both parks
  • Spruced up playgrounds with fresh fibar play mulch and fresh sand for the sand boxes
  • Cleaned up and added stonedust to walkways and gathering areas
  • Collected 89 tires from the river
  • Gathered 25 cubic yards of debris, cleaning up areas surrounding the bike path & river
  • Removed over 15 instances of large graffiti

This year, we’re kicking off our cleanups in Providence, but we will have activities along all areas of the greenway from Providence through Johnston. Our annual Kickoff event launches into our Clean Days on the Greenway Series where over 1,300 people join WRWC each year to help make the Greenway a more vibrant place.
